Now, I personally cannot vouch for the accuracy of the representation, but I know that Alice has done a lot of research while writing these characters, and so far, I’ve heard nothing but praises for them, so, great! “What do you do when everything goes to shit, then?”Īs with other Alice Oseman books, this one is packed with diverse religion, race and sexuality (casually thrown in without any emphasis) as well as non-romantic relationships (which is always a breath of fresh air in the Contemporary YA genre). The story starts to unfold when Angel and Jimmy Kaga-Ricci (frontman of The Ark, Indian-Italian trans guy) are thrust together time and time again and she slowly realizes that they’re not as godlike as she thought they were. This book follows Fereshteh ‘Angel’ Rahimi, a young hijabi and fangirl of a famous boyband – The Ark – as she meets her internet friend, Juliet (also a fangirl) for the first time to go to one of The Ark’s shows. It also destroys the idea that celebrities “have it all” and are living the picture-perfect life we’ve always dreamed of. It demolishes society’s notion that fangirls are insane and only like boybands because they’re attractive. That being said, I Was Born For This is a pretty great book which allows us a peek into the lives of superstars and vice versa.

I’ll have to admit that I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I did Radio Silence, only because I couldn’t quite relate to the whole fangirling-over-boybands mania. I’d complain about uni fucking me up, but let’s focus on the book for now.
